Jvcxb interview

A Conversation with Jvcxb, the Producer Behind the Metal Trap Wave.

Kassgocrazy x October 15th, 2019

In the glamour of Oklahoma City lies an underrated talent flying under the radar but above his peers. At only 16 he’s accomplished more than the average high school student producing for artists like Scarlxrd amongst many other relevant characters in the underground. He stands a representative of the dark and gruesome metal rap scene with the exception of his modernist trap influence.

Growing up, he was no stranger to rattling music. By no surprise his earliest memories of music were classic 80’s rock and heavy metal. His parents were heavily involved in music which inspired him to make some of his own. He would soon go under the name Jvcxb and quickly start to innovate and surpass the commonery of the underground. At only 14 he began to build an aesthetic around his name making intense bass heavy trap remixes which would amass thousands of views. At this age he managed to produce Scarlxrd’s smash hit Heart Attack and have millions of people wondering who exactly Jvcxb is.

How did you start making beats?

I started making beats on this website, it was really cool. It was like a legit software but online and it was super social. Made a lot of friends through it. A friend that I actually met on there sent me FL Studio, so ever since then I started making better beats.

Did you always know you wanted to do music?

For sure. I grew up in a very musical household, all of my siblings and my mom do something musically, like my mom can sing and my brother and sister play the guitar. It’s crazy, so that definitely made me interested in making some type of music early on.

What’s the story behind Heart Attack? How did you meet Scarlxrd?

I met Scarlxrd through SoundCloud. I hit him up when he only had about 7,000 followers on there, so super small compared to what he is now. He asked to use my beat that I had uploaded on my SoundCloud, and he put the song on his album. It’s funny because when he dropped the album, it was the smallest song on the entire album, then he just dropped the music video for it and it went crazy viral.

The Heart Attack  beat started an entire wave of new music in 2017. You made that beat when you were only 14, what were the pressures that came with that? Did you expect that song to take off how it did?

When I made that beat, I obviously gained a lot of attention from it, and to be honest the whole “trap metal” scene got played out super fast, so everybody expected me to only make those kind of beats, when in reality, when I made the beat for Heart Attack, I was just in a phase of making super crazy hard beats like that, so I was basically labeled as only a trap metal producer. I knew the song was crazy when he showed it to me, and when it dropped I was in love with the song, not only because it was my first actual placement, but because I knew it went hard. It was definitely unexpected.

Who are your main inspirations in music right now? Who are your favorite artists/bands?

Everything daily inspires me. My friends inspire me, lots of movies and games as well, like the vibe of The Breakfast Club, Edward Scissorhands, and the soundtrack to Resident Evil 4 inspired me a lot. I mean it’s crazy. Sometimes just going outside or going somewhere I’ve never been will inspire me. There’s also some of my favorite artists that inspire me, like Oliver Francis, Bones, Sybyr, to bands like Immortal, Deftones, Darkthrone, and Bathory. Lots of crazy stuff.

You said you’re heavily inspired by heavy metal, how were you able to incorporate that genre into your music?

I think if you compare it to some of my beats, you can see the similarity. Like the distorted kicks, the bass, the dark melodies. It honestly inspired me a lot to make those kind of beats.

What is your advice for any producers struggling with finding their own sound? You seem to have built an aesthetic and vibe around your name?

As generic as it sounds, just keep working. Try new things.

Is it bizarre to see kids on reddit posting things about you? You’ve become a well known producer in the underground in such . How do you plan on expanding on the success you built so far?

It’s so crazy. When I started making beats I never knew it would get nearly this far, especially with people posting about me. It still shocks me to this day that I’ve been able to make a name for myself enough to that point. I just plan to keep on working harder and harder.

Who’s underrated in the underground scene right now?

So many. I think Sybyr, Nova, UnoTheActivist, Oliver Francis, and Tracy are all super underrated. They’re all super talented.

Who are your favorite artists/producers to collaborate with?

I only work with a few people, honestly. BabyBlu and Patrick Moone are easily my favorite. My two closest friends, like my brothers and both are super talented.

In your Instagram bio you have the word Faceless. Do you feel that it’s important for you to separate yourself from the music?

For sure. I’ve been at a point in my career where it just gets super stressful because I didn’t know how to separate producing and making music from daily things, and it took a toll on me, so I definitely think it’s important. I mainly just use music as an outlet.

A little off topic but do you believe in aliens? Alternate universes?

I’m not sure if I do to be honest, haha. I believe in heaven and hell and all that as far as like alternative universes. I think it’s possible though.

What are some of your hobbies besides music? Any weird talents?

Between producing and school, I hardly have time to do anything, but I skate, I have been for years so that for sure. I don’t got any weird talents or anything unusual. Just kinda basic stuff like playing guitar and drums and stuff like that. Nothing unique.

Back on a musical note. You sampled Teeth by XXXTENTACION two years ago and it currently has over 50k plays on soundcloud. What did he mean to you?

At the time he meant a lot to me. His music was super unique, like at that time nobody was doing what he was doing, he created a whole wave and the loud distorted production inspired me even more.

If there was one thing you could re-do in your music career so far what would it be?

I think I would just take things slower and not try to rush the workflow.

So what’s next for you? Any new placements or projects we can expect from you soon?

I’m working on a solo project at the moment, I have more music with Scarlxrd coming as well. As far as other projects, just making things with friends and myself.

Well that about wraps it up. Any parting words for readers?

I’m working on lots of new music and different things, stay tuned!
